About Negombo
Negombo is a laid-back coastal city located just 15 minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport, making it the most convenient first or last stop on any Sri Lanka itinerary. Known as the "Little Rome" of Sri Lanka due to its large Catholic population and numerous historic churches, Negombo offers a delightful introduction to the island with its golden sandy beach, lively fishing harbor, and rich colonial heritage shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences.
The Negombo beach stretch runs for several kilometers along the Indian Ocean, lined with restaurants, bars, and guesthouses that cater to every budget. The city's fishing heritage is its soul — the bustling Negombo Fish Market is one of the most authentic and photogenic experiences on the west coast, where fishermen bring in their catch at dawn and the fish are auctioned in a chaotic, colorful spectacle. The nearby Dutch Canal, built in the 17th century, offers peaceful boat rides through mangrove-lined waterways, while the Muthurajawela Marsh — one of the largest wetlands in Sri Lanka — provides exceptional bird watching just south of the city.
