About Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura is the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka, founded in the 4th century BC and lasting as the seat of power for over 1,300 years. This sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site contains some of the most sacred Buddhist monuments in the world, including the Sri Maha Bodhi — the oldest living human-planted tree in the world, grown from a sapling of the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
The ancient city covers an area of over 40 square kilometers and features massive dagobas (stupas), monastic complexes, royal palaces, and an intricate network of reservoirs and canals that demonstrate the remarkable engineering prowess of ancient Sri Lankans. It remains one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists worldwide.
